It’s only the second game: NYR/NYI Game Review

October 12, 2010

“Martinek is one of those players I want to punch in the face.” Said my lovely girlfriend sometime in the second period after he took a cheap shot at Derek Stephan after the whistle. “So goes the game of hockey.” I said…a few times yesterday afternoon. I said it after bad calls made that game. When Gaborik flopped to get the penalty shot, I said “So goes the game of hockey.” When Marc Staal “High Sticked” an Islander which lead to an Islanders five on three advantage and two goals and a win…I said “So goes the game of hockey.” I also said to her, “It’s only the second game.”

The offense continues to be the story for the Rangers with the defense stepping up and shooting the puck, something that was absent last year. Dan Garardi and Michael Del Zotto had goals from the outside. The Rangers are taking shots from every angle, attacking the net and going for the rebound. Plays like these are what the Rangers need if they have any chance at the playoffs this year. But someone should tell Steve Eminger to stay by the blue line. It seems every time he attacked the net the Islanders came away with a two on one.

One concern I have is the inconsistency first line of Gaborik, Frolov, and Christensen. Erik Christensen is showing that he is a mediocre player at best. I don’t feel he is first line material and it’s yet to be seen if Chris Drury will make an impact this year in the first line, but Christensen is a step behind the speed of Gaborik and Frolov. They need someone like Derek Stephan to complement their offensive skill.

The next game is Friday against the Leafs. Let hope the Rangers will continue their offensive awesomeness. I will leave you with Brandon Prust taking Zenon Konopka to task. Thank you Hockey Fights for the video.
